THE COPPINS

A timber clad extension to an existing ‘upside-down’ house in South Wales, providing a seamstress workshop at ground floor and a dining terrace above.

The design concept treats the extension as a single piece of furniture, incorporating an integrated staircase that wraps down from the upper dining area of the existing house and new terrace, down to an external garden space suitable for entertaining. The underside of the stair incorporates external storage for a BBQ at ground level.

The ground floor room includes sliding doors that open up the corner of the workshop to the garden. Taking inspiration from the client’s passion for fabric and sewing, the extension is clad in square section larch that extends to form the balustrade and openings at the upper level.
