The Church View
The Church View: A gentle renewal that deepens the connection between home, garden, and the Brecon Beacons landscape.
Tucked within the Brecon Beacons National Park, The Church View is a home shaped by its quiet rural setting and the soft rise of hills beyond. This project restores and reimagines an existing house — creating spaces that open outward, breathe more deeply, and draw the calm of the garden into the heart of daily life. Crafted for a couple who value detail and tranquillity, the design nurtures a renewed sense of ease and belonging.
To unlock the home’s full potential, a full-width rear extension now brings the kitchen, dining, and living spaces into a harmonious flow — each room naturally orienting itself toward the garden and its shifting light. Brick, a material rooted in both the existing house and its rural context, guides the palette and grounds the new intervention. Large sliding doors open fully onto a level terrace, allowing interior and exterior to merge seamlessly. A built-in window seat offers a quieter way to dwell within the landscape, framing views and moments of rest throughout the day.
Project Detail
Architecturally, the extension sits as a contemporary counterpart to the main house, its clean lines and refined detailing complementing the traditional massing without imitation. Brickwork ties the new structure to its context, while the full-height glazing introduces a clarity and openness previously missing from the home. The rear elevation has been re-formed to maximise transparency, connection, and accessibility — key considerations for the clients and their future needs. The unified plan strengthens the relationship between interior spaces and the garden, ensuring that light, warmth, and landscape remain central to the architecture. The result is a subtle yet transformative intervention: a home that feels both renewed and deeply rooted in its National Park setting.
