The Middle House

The Middle House — A Gentle Transformation.

Tucked along a historic street, The Middle House is a Grade II listed townhouse reimagined with a lightness of touch and deep respect for its past. The project gently opens up the home — introducing a calm, generous kitchen and dining space at ground level, a renewed attic retreat above, and a quiet sense of cohesion throughout.

The new addition is intentionally modest, nestled into the footprint of the former kitchen to minimise its presence and preserve the home’s character. Glazed openings, natural zinc, and pale concrete form a restrained palette that sits in quiet contrast to the original stonework — a contemporary layer that reflects and recedes rather than competes. This is not a statement of difference, but a thoughtful continuation of what already belongs.

Inside, the atmosphere is soft and tactile. Polished concrete floors meet warm timber and muted joinery, framing views of the garden and drawing light through the home. A simple, light-grey terrace bridges level changes across the site, creating a subtle threshold between inside and out — a gentle plinth that grounds the new architecture in both function and feeling. This is a home renewed through care, where old and new speak in harmony.

Project Detail

The Middle House is a Grade II listed terraced house in Gloucester, sensitively extended and refurbished to create a light-filled kitchen and dining space at ground floor, with a renewed attic bedroom and bathroom above. The rear extension follows the footprint of the original kitchen, using a restrained palette — glazed façades, natural zinc, and pale concrete — to form a deferential contrast to the existing stonework. A flat zinc roofline and slim-framed glazing keep the addition visually recessive, while a light-grey terrace mediates level changes and connects house and garden. Internally, polished concrete, timber, and muted joinery provide a calm, contemporary counterpoint to the character of the original interiors. The scheme balances heritage and modernity with care — introducing a subtle, well-crafted addition that enhances the home without overpowering its historic fabric.
