The Nuthatch Retreat

The Nuthatch Retreat: A quiet hillside retreat — shaped with lightness, rooted in nature, and gently connected to home.

Set on the wooded slopes of Gloucestershire, The Nuthatch Retreat offers a place of calm independence — an intimate extension to a much-loved family home, yet a space that stands with its own sense of presence and quiet purpose. Tucked just below the main house, the retreat feels held by the hillside, shaped by the trees, and fully open to the vast sweep of the Severn Valley. It is a place designed for stillness, reflection, and connection — to landscape, to home, and to the rhythms of those who gather there.

Conceived as a self-contained two-bedroom annex, the retreat provides a kitchen-diner, living area, and bathroom within a simple, linear plan that unfolds toward the valley views. It is designed to serve extended family, guests, or those seeking moments of solitude — balancing privacy with proximity to the main house. Clad in natural timber and set low into the sloping ground, the building rests lightly on the site, its presence softened by the surrounding woodland.

Wide glazing draws daylight deep into the interior, framing long vistas and allowing seasonal shifts — mist, colour, shadow, and sun — to become part of daily living. Above, a planted green roof extends the hillside, ensuring the garden flows uninterrupted and preserving long views from the home above.

Project Detail

The Nuthatch Retreat is guided by the principles of gentle intervention and contextual sensitivity. Its single-storey form slides naturally into the terrain, reducing visual impact and enhancing thermal stability. The timber cladding — chosen for its natural weathering and tactility — anchors the structure within its woodland setting, while the green roof further integrates the building into the landscape, improving biodiversity and assisting with water management. Large-format glazing establishes a strong relationship between interior and exterior, creating a living edge where architecture meets nature. Internally, clean lines and a restrained palette bring clarity and calm, allowing the structure of the space — light, proportion, and the choreography of views — to take the lead. Thoughtfully positioned and beautifully made, The Nuthatch Retreat becomes a seamless extension to the home above, yet a distinctive place in its own right: a small sanctuary shaped with care, rooted lightly on the land, and deeply attuned to the valley it overlooks.
